Name: Anthony J Crowley
Canon: Good Omens (book)
Canon Point: Post-book, after averting the apocalypse
CRAU Timeline/Game(s): Roughly 7 months spent in City of Sin.
CRAU History: After being dumped unceremoniously into a world that felt very uncomfortably like being back in Hell, just without as many demons who wanted him dead (though there were demons, and they were trying to kill him sometimes, it just wasn't personal) Crowley almost immediately reunited with Aziraphale and pretty much clung to his side for the entire time. Though he was very subtle about it (he was not very subtle about it).
A lot of what went on in the place went entirely over his head - political intrigue and shadowy nonsense has never really been one of his major interests - though he had been coming around to the idea that maybe he ought to be taking an interest in the fact that high-ranking native 'leaders' were being murdered right left and centre before it suddenly no longer mattered.
Personality: Described as ‘Hell’s Most Approachable Demon’, Crowley lives up to that name (as much as demons can be called approachable). He is affable and charming when he wants to be, with a vicious streak a mile wide… if not as wide as that of a certain angel.
Crowley’s time on Earth has made him ‘soft’ compared to other demons. He likes the comforts in life and always wants to have the best things. His vintage Bentley is kept in pristine condition, and is his pride and joy. This demon’s personality when compared to those of his ‘coworkers’ is far more rounded than simple and savage, undoubtedly due to the amount of time he has spent on Earth and the company he has chosen to keep.
Once the serpent who tempted Eve to taste the Forbidden Fruit, Crowley has been riding on that success since. He can be squeamish about the lengths mortals will go to in order to hurt one another, and realised a long time ago that he doesn’t have to do very much at all to nudge them in that direction. It isn’t that he doesn't do his job, and he’s got ideas about just how they could make improvements Downstairs, but his fellow demons don’t share his forward vision and have no interest in how much use they could get out of electricity.
Contrary to what one might expect of a demon, Crowley is good-natured. He’s honest… ish and has principles which tend to put him at odds with what’s expected of him from other demons. He questions, and that’s generally not a good thing for a being who is supposed to be an embodiment of Evil on Earth. More than that, he came to an Arrangement with an angel a long time ago, agreeing they wouldn’t get in the way of one another, and while it has made his life arguably much easier it isn’t something that would go down well at all with his superiors.
Crowley is a sharp-minded, perceptive and capable individual, though he does prefer the easy way out if such an option is available to him and prefers to keep as few people involved in a plan as possible. He can find the resources to complete a task, but remains unambitious when it comes to the machinations of Hell.
This demon also cares about things. He cares about Earth, about humans, and about Aziraphale. He cares enough to muster an incredible amount of courage at times. From baiting two demons with holy water and a telephone line, to running into a burning building in search of an endangered friend, to driving his Bentley across an open hellgate in order to face down Satan and avert Armageddon, he undoubtedly cares about many things outside of himself.
When things start to get out of hand, and particularly when he is in danger, Crowley has the tendency to become jumpy. He has a flair for the dramatic, showing himself to be excitable at times, and his quick thinking when it comes to planning his next move in tense situations verges on impulsive.
He can be challenging to get along with. While he can be charming, it’s often limited to when he wants something. Crowley is often abrasive and sarcastic, living a solitary life save for encounters with Aziraphale, and he has a sharp-edged humour that becomes whimsical when he’s had too much to drink. Despite honesty towards some he is an accomplished liar, especially to his superiors… usually only to his superiors, since they’re the ones who could put a stop to his comfortable life.
CRAU Development: Outside of tentatively embarking on a romantic relationship with his long-term friend Aziraphale, Crowley remains more or less the same as he was when he arrived in CoS.
Powers/Abilities:
Shapeshifting: Crowley is able to take different forms, and though only two of them are specifically indicated in the book (a large black snake, and ‘something terrible’ which is never described in detail, but involves maggots) it is reasonable to assume there is little limit to the shapeshifting. He does, however, much prefer his human form and is very unlikely to be shapeshifting all over the place. It’s just not his thing.
Reality-altering ⁂: He can alter reality within a certain radius of himself (presumably). While it’s not likely he’ll be creating hurricanes on the other side of the world, he can change the state of matter, change objects into other objects, hold a collapsing, entirely on fire Bentley together by sheer force of will, and ensure that coincidences/events mount up in certain ways to ensure that certain things happen. An example of this would be when, after getting caught in the crossfire of a paintball competition, he turns all the paintball guns into real guns and gives the humans a nudge to use them… but also makes sure that none of them are going to be fatally injured. He can also do things such as keep a watch running with no battery, a car running with no fuel, and have a sound system that produces sound without having any speakers. This power is mostly used for the purpose of conjuring up mild inconveniences for laughs, and driving 90mph down Oxford Street (which, of course, is impossible).
Mind control ⁂: Able to put people to sleep, make them forget things, and put ‘ideas’ into their heads based on their impulses. Never shown to be anything as direct as fully taking over someone’s thoughts.
Immortality ⁂: Effectively immortal. Crowley can be ‘discorporated’ (that is, his essence or immortal spirit can be forced out of his body if it takes enough damage), but he can’t be permanently killed. Unless, presumably, someone throws a bucket of holy water over him.
Vice-sensing: As a demon, he has the ability to sense the vices/worst qualities of a person and… give them a little nudge in that direction. He never directly interferes, because that isn’t how it’s done, and also isn’t really allowed.
Wings: While they aren’t shown off often, Crowley is the proud owner of a very nice pair of white, feathered wings. They spend most of their time dematerialised, and will rip through his clothes when they appear, if he doesn’t take them off first.
No Need Meters: Crowley doesn’t need to eat, drink, or sleep, though he very much enjoys all of those things. He can get drunk, but can just as easily choose to not be drunk anymore.
Inventory: Nothing outside of what he's wearing.
Anything Else?
⁂ Regarding the likely possibility of nerfing powers, I’d propose the following! Happy to go further with it if need be.
Reality-altering: Limited by a shorter distance (ie, within his immediate vicinity), and nothing game-breaking!
Mind control: Limited to one person at a time, with a time limit for how long it would be effective.
Immortality: If he has to be 100% killable, he certainly can be!
